![]() | Julian using a relief press Printmaking is seen as a powerful expressive medium which offers an opportunity to work, without preconceptions or stylistic formulae, in ways that may be based in fine art, where both cerebral and instinctive responses are highly valued. |

The ancient university city of Cambridge offers an excellent cultural environment for the study of printmaking. There are several independent galleries as well as the Fitzwilliam Museum and Art Gallery which holds one of the finest collections of prints outside London. We also have links with print workshops in the area including the Curwen Press and St. Barnabas Press which print the works of nationally and internationally recognised artists. Students sometimes have the opportunity to work at the Curwen. Four students had their work exhibited at the International Student Print Exhibition at Falmouth College of Art earlier this year. Last year third year students exhibited their work in the Mall Gallery, London and in the Old Fire Engine House, Ely. Printmaking has only existed as a specialist area at Cambridge for five years but there is evidence of growing success. Last year three of the small group of eleven were accepted for postgraduate courses. So far this year five out of a group of thirteen specialists have been accepted. | |
